O’Leary Walker Polish Hill River Armagh Shiraz 2022: Best Value

O'Leary Walker Polish Hill River Armagh Shiraz 2022, when on special for $23, is one of the best value Australian red wines of 2024.

It's pretty amazing that you can get this level of red wine quality for $23. Yes it’s meant to cost $35 but a number of retailers have it listed at $23 (here, for instance). If you like traditional Aussie red styles, packed with flavour but well structured too, then this is your winter sorted.

The exact name of the wine I’m talking about is the O'Leary Walker Polish Hill River Armagh Shiraz 2022. The wine lays down the law in the glass, and that’s what matters most, but the name Armagh in the title doesn't hurt, given that it’s a famous name (of a vineyard) in the Clare Valley. Armagh here though refers to the sub-region rather than to that specific vineyard. Still, Armagh Shiraz for $23! At this price, combined with the quality in the glass, this wine will be one of the best value Australian red wines of 2024.

On Winefront I concluded my review of this wine by saying that it’s “both a polished red wine and a gutsy one. If you like full-bodied red wine, go for this.” I gave it 93/100. Other (non-Winefront) reviewers have scored it even higher. If a rich, grunty, well-structured shiraz at a serious discount sounds good to you, then, you know, you’re welcome.

Obviously I have no affiliation with the above retailer, of any kind, and don’t intend to point out specials in general. But this special seemed so startling that I even reached out to the site owner to double-check that it was legit. It is.

Later, I also found this wine listed here. So the $23 sale on this wine is a thing.

Reccomended?: Yes, definitely.
Paid: $23, supplied.
Pros: Great depth of flavour and the tannin/structure to match.
Cons: You have to shop around to find it at $23.

(I tasted the previous 2021 release only a few months ago and that’s a ripping wine too. It’s also available at a great price – see here. Happy days.)
